Warner comment lifts lid on Ashes’ biggest surprise

Good morning and welcome to our day two coverage of the fourth Ashes Test at the SCG.

After a rain affected day one, the Pink Test is about to get into a fascinatinvg phase, with Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja at the crease on a pitch that has been tipped to be a batting paradise.

At least one of them will need to make a big hundred to make good on that prediction, with England’s bowling attack looking good on day one and honours pretty close to even with the stumps score of 3/126.

While the contest is still hot on the field, the heat has well and truly gone out of the series off it, with David Warner making a comment that again highlighted the friendly spirit the series is being played in.

Responding to a tweet from Michael Vaughan praising England fast bowler Mark Wood for his efforts over the series, Warner agreed and went further, describing him as a “legend”.

It’s a long way from the 2013/14 series exchange between Michael Clarke and Jimmy Anderson, when the Australian captain told the England spearhead to “get ready for a broken f–king arm”.
