Jon Gruden’s email comment about Colin Kaepernick draws attention

Jon Gruden was forced to resign as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders this week after numerous offensive remarks he made in private emails were leaked to the media. A strong opinion Gruden expressed about Colin Kaepernick has also drawn attention.

The topic of Kaepernick’s national anthem protest came up in the emails Gruden exchanged with former Washington team executive Bruce Allen. Both expressed anger over Kaepernick kneeling during the anthem to call attention to police brutality. In an email that was sent on Aug. 28, 2016, Gruden said Kaepernick should be cut.

“They suspend people for taking amino acids they should cut this f—,” Gruden wrote to Allen, via Henry Bushnell and Jason Owens of Yahoo Sports.

Allen responded that he had already “expressed my OUTRAGE” over the Kaepernick protests. Gruden then sent back, “Good for you.”

Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers following the 2016 season and has not played since. Most people believe that the protests played a role in him not finding another job in the NFL, though his overall on-field performance was mediocre at best.

Kaepernick reached a confidential settlement with the NFL in 2019 after accusing the league of collusion in a lawsuit.

Jack Hughes played 117 games in the NHL as a teenager over the course of two pandemic-shortened seasons, and he scored 18 goals with 34 assists. Not a star performance, by any means, but good for a teenager — especially since he showed lots of improvement in his second campaign.

We live in a world, though, where Connor McDavid played 89 games in the NHL as a teenager and scored 30 goals with 68 assists. And since Hughes was the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL draft in 2019, four years after McDavid was the top choice, well, there was already debate about Hughes’ “bust” status.

Hughes looked pretty good on Friday in his first game as a 20-year-old, scoring the overtime winner to lead the Devils past Chicago.

Fake out, hesitate, reverse, laser, game. And sure, why not, let’s chuck the stick into the crowd for good measure!

“I think it was a 2-on-1 for most of the rink, so I had a lot of options going through my mind during the skate — and Gravy (Ryan Graves) drove the net so I had the patience and kind of moved the goalie,” Hughes said later. “I had an empty net after that.”

Dougie Hamilton, making his debut with New Jersey after signing a seven year, $63 million contract in the offseason, scored just 17 seconds in to help the Devils jump out to a 3-1 lead before Hughes’ OT heroics were needed.

Yes, an overtime goal is just at 3-on-3. Yes, Chicago’s defense is bad. Yes, it’s just one game. It’s also one game that included another Hughes goal. Only 16 more to go until he has as many as he did in his teens.

There’s a reason you don’t give up on prospects before they’re of legal drinking age.

Why did Adele get divorced? Marriage with Simon Konecki explored as ‘Easy on Me’ breaks records

Adele’s comeback single Easy on Me has officially become the most-streamed song on Spotify, garnering over 20 million streams within 24 hours of its release. The record-breaking track is the first single from upcoming album 30, set to be released next month.

During the official announcement of the album, the singer mentioned that it was written during the “most turbulent” period of her life. The project reportedly draws from her divorce with former husband Simon Konecki, with the latest single largely referring to the split.

The song documents the singer’s journey as she finally decides to move out of her marriage. It depicts her struggles to make the marriage work before choosing to “give up” the hope in search of her own happiness.

Adele previously told British Vogue that she has dedicated the album to her nine-year-old son in an attempt to explain the divorce to him later:

“I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness. It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.”

Adele possibly addressed her son in Easy on Me, asking the listener to “go easy” on her for her life choices. Through the lyrics she also explained how she changed herself to prioritize her husband and son’s happiness.

The song also highlighted that the singer tried to hold on to hope and optimism but failed to change the situation, ultimately leading to the divorce.

A look into Adele’s marriage and divorce with Simon Konecki

Adele and Simon Konecki sparked dating rumors for the first time when they were spotted together in Florida back in 2011. It is not known how the duo first met but they publicly confirmed their relationship in 2012.

Simon was previously married to stylist Clary Fisher and Adele confirmed on her website that she started dating him only after he got divorced:

“This is the first and last time I will comment on the details of my relationship with Simon. Contrary to reports and headlines in the press today, Simon is divorced and has been for four years. Everyone in our lives separately and together wish us nothing but the best, and vice versa. These are the facts.”

In June 2012, the Grammy Award winner announced that she was expecting her first child with the drop4drop founder. The couple welcomed their son Angelo in October of that same year. However, the pair mostly kept their relationship out of the public eye.

However, the pair sparked marriage rumors after they were spotted wearing rings on their fingers in 2017, and Adele later confirmed that the duo had a private wedding. Unfortunately, the duo decided to part ways in 2019 and filed for mutual divorce. The singer’s representative also confirmed the news to US Weekly:

“Adele and her partner have separated. They are committed to raising their son together lovingly. As always they ask for privacy. There will be no further comment.”

Their divorce was finalized earlier this year, months before the Hello hitmaker announced her comeback album inspired by her split from Simon. She mentioned that the she started working on the project nearly three years ago, around the time of the separation.

While speaking to British Vogue ahead of the release, Adele shared that she decided to part ways with her husband as their relationship no longer made them happy:

“I was just going through the motions and I wasn’t happy. Neither of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved. It’s really important to me. I’ve been on my journey to find my true happiness ever since.”

The artist further mentioned that she decided to end the marriage in search of her own happiness even though it made her son unhappy:

“If I can reach the reason why I left, which was the pursuit of my own happiness, even though it made Angelo really unhappy — if I can find that happiness and he sees me in that happiness, then maybe I’ll be able to forgive myself for it.”

She also said that she did not want to end up being miserable by continuing the marriage without happiness:

“It just wasn’t right for me anymore. I didn’t want to end up like a lot of other people I knew. I wasn’t miserable miserable, but I would have been miserable had I not put myself first.”

Adele also confessed that she poured her heart regarding the situation in her single Easy On Me:

“It’s not like anyone’s having a go at me. But it’s like, I left the marriage. Be kind to me as well. It was the first song I wrote for the album and then I didn’t write anything else for six months after because I was like, ‘OK, well, I’ve said it all.'”

The Rolling in the Deep singer has possibly moved on from her marriage and is currently dating American sports agent Rich Paul. However, Adele continues to co-parent her son with her ex-husband, and the former pair even live on the same street to make the process easier.

Undefeated in four matches, a resurgent Arsenal (11th, 10 points) meets Crystal Palace (14th, 7 points), which is looking better every week under former Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira.

COVID concerns put aside as WBBL rolls on

The WBBL continued on Saturday night in Hobart despite concerns relating to a COVID-19 outbreak in the city.

Hobart and other parts of southern Tasmania were forced into a snap three-day lockdown after a NSW man allegedly entered the state illegally, before escaping hotel quarantine.

Thankfully, matches went ahead at Blundstone Arena on Saturday night, albeit without fans.

“The league and all eight clubs are incredibly thankful to the Tasmanian Government for allowing the WBBL to safely continue in Hobart this weekend,” said Alistair Dobson, CA’s general manager of Big Bash Leagues.

“We’d also like to express our gratitude to players and staff from all Clubs, plus match officials, broadcast partners and venue staff for their understanding as we worked through the final details with the Tasmanian Government.

“The experience gained from last summer means all involved in the WBBL are well prepared to do whatever necessary to conduct a safe and successful competition this year.”

In the first match of the day, the hometown Hurricanes posted 121 all out, which was chased down by the Melbourne Renegades with four balls to spare.

What should have been a relatively easy chase proved tricky for the Renegades, until the second last over, when they needed 10 runs from nine balls and Indian international Harmanpreet Kaur blasted a massive six over mid-wicket.

Adelaide then took the win in the second game of the double header, their total of 7-140 proving too much for the Sydney Thunder.

Strikers skipper Tahlia McGrath top scored with 42 from 34 balls, before taking 3-17 win the ball in a superb all-round performance as the Thunder were dismissed for 110.

The Hurricanes will quickly back up against the Sydney Sixers tomorrow at 10.15am (AEDT), before the Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat get their respective campaigns underway at 1.40pm.

Dasun Shanaka backs inexperienced Sri Lanka to go deep: ‘I think we’ve struck a good balance’

Says his side has the variety and depth to deliver; thinks young Pathum Nissanka can “make this tournament his own”

Sri Lanka may have had a horror year in terms of squad building and preparation, and the biggest tests undoubtedly lie ahead, but that has failed to dull captain Dasun Shanaka’s optimism ahead of the Men’s T20 World Cup. Drawing parallels to the vintage side that won the 2014 tournament, the Sri Lanka captain feels that his current side has similar depth and variety, something he believes could see them potentially go a “long way in this tournament” – even if they lack considerably in terms of experience.

“If you recall, that squad had a lot of variety and depth. And with the youngsters we have coming through now I feel have the same potential, but the only thing lacking is the experience,” Shanaka said, speaking on a captains’ Zoom call. “If our guys perform to their strengths I feel they can go a long way in this tournament. Our fans in Sri Lanka have been waiting a long time for us to be successful, and I hope we can make them proud.”

Much of Shanaka’s optimism stems from the balance the team has seemingly struck in the past few weeks. For most of the year Sri Lanka’s white-ball batting blueprint had centred around the likes of Danushka Gunathilaka, Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis, but following the trio’s ban for breaching curfew and bio-bubble protocols, the last few months have seen the Sri Lankan think-tank mix and match several options in the top and middle order with little success.

However, following a training camp last month, which consisted of several intra-squad matches geared towards nailing down roles for each player, Sri Lanka seem to have stumbled on something resembling balance.

Avishka Fernando has been a revelation at No. 4, Chamika Karunaratne and Shanaka have shown promise in their roles as finishers lower down the order, and in the bowling department there are two quicks who can regularly dish out speeds touching 140kph, and spinners with as many variations as you’re likely to see all tournament.
“We were not able to perform up to the mark in the last few years, but still the strength of our squad is very good. We’ve got two guys coming from the IPL [Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga], Kusal Janith [Perera] at the top of the order and Avishka Fernando, who is going well, coming in at No. 4.

“We are settled with our batting line-up. We’ve recently changed our line-up a bit – I think we’ve struck a good balance.”

“If our guys perform to their strengths I feel they can go a long way in this tournament. Our fans in Sri Lanka have been waiting a long time for us to be successful, and I hope we can make them proud.”

Dasun Shanaka

The only point of debate, combination-wise, might be at the top of the order, with the opening combination still unsettled. Sri Lanka have tried out three different pairs in their last four matches, with one of Dinesh Chandimal, Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva partnering Pathum Nissanka. Indeed, despite being a last-minute addition to the squad, Nissanka seems to be the only certainty in terms of Sri Lanka’s opening combo, and Shanaka is backing the highly rated youngster – who has yet to make his mark in white-ball cricket – to show his class on the biggest stage.

“He’s been a guy coming through the system, so we know how capable he is. Still, when you come to the biggest stage you have to make your mark by scoring good runs. I feel he will make this tournament his own and make it count.”

Shanaka has far fewer concerns is in the bowling department. Even with Nuwan Pradeep being ruled out of the tournament with an eleventh-hour hamstring injury, Sri Lanka have in Chameera and Lahiru Kumara two bowlers capable of clocking high speeds.

Chameera’s 2021 T20 record in particular has been worthy of note, with his 15 wickets in 12 T20Is and an economy rate of 6.51. Needless to say a fit Chameera is integral to Sri Lanka’s plans.

“Going with two main fast bowlers, they give a lot of quality to the squad. And Associate nations, they don’t face a lot of 140+ fast bowlers.

“Obviously losing Pradeep is a concern. He had been bowling brilliantly over the last six months, and we were counting on him during this tournament, but still what we can get from Lahiru Kumara and Dushmantha is massive.”

In the spin department, meanwhile, Sri Lanka boast the No.2-ranked spinner in the world in Hasaranga – a 2021 that brought 20 wickets in 12 matches with an economy rate of 5.59, tells its own story – while in Maheesh Theekshana Sri Lanka have the latest from their production line of mystery spinners. Akila Dananjaya also provides experience and guile, even if he is yet to scale the heights he frequented prior to a change in bowling action.

“He [Hasaranga] has been amazing over the last two years, and now he’s sitting in the No. 2 spot [in the rankings]. He’s very hard to pick at times, because he bowls from a lower angle. Meanwhile, along with Wanindu, we also have Maheesh Theekshana – that’s two young, exciting talents. Going forward I feel that they will do a really good job for the team.”

Sri Lanka also have one final ace in their corner in Mahela Jayawardene, who recently took up a role as consultant coach. During his stint with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Jayawardene has proven himself as one of the most tactically astute minds in world cricket, and Shanaka feels having him in his corner is proving invaluable.

“He’s been amazing over the years, and tactically he’s brilliant. As a captain, he’s been giving me a lot of support in the field. For me, tactically he’s the best in the business. He’s been a real help to all of us.”

Sri Lanka begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Namibia on 18 October.
